Roman Arena
| Constructed during the reign of Claudius around 40
AD, the roman arena of Saintes is characterised by a cavea, rows
of terraced seats cut into the sides of a small natural valley, and into
earthworks in the west. On the eastern side the structure is closed by
impressive masonry works. The arena measures 126 by 102 metres and once
held up to fifteen thousand spectators. |
