The Royal Ropemakers
| Built in 1666, the Corderie Royale (royal ropemakers) was
by far the longest manufacturing plant in Europe in the 17th century,
and it was here that the rigging was fabricated for the great warships
of the time. Today the Corderie is the centrepiece of a maritime heritage centre and the symbol of that most ancient of ambitions: the conquest of the sea. This sumptious architectural gem, open to the public all year round, will introduce to you the extraordinary process of rope-making, after which an exhibition celebrating man's adventure with the sea awaits. |
